How Much Does It Cost to Make an AI Movie?
An AI film budget is driven less by final runtime than by the number of attempts required to obtain usable shots. A polished two-minute film can cost more than a rough ten-minute video if it demands complex characters, precise action, and many rerenders.
Budget the complete workflow
Include writing, concept images, video generation, voice or actors, music, sound effects, editing, upscaling, storage, captions, artwork, festival fees, and the filmmaker's time. Free trials are useful for tests but unreliable for a production schedule.
Estimate shots and attempts
List the required shots, estimate average generations per usable result, then add a contingency for continuity repairs and revisions. Hero shots and dialogue close-ups usually need more attempts than establishing shots or abstract transitions.
Control cost before generation
Test difficult scenes at lower resolution, lock references early, reuse locations, limit wardrobe changes, and approve storyboards before animating. The cheapest generation is the one you decide not to make.
Track a real cost per finished minute
Record every subscription, credit purchase, contractor invoice, and hour. Dividing the total by finished runtime creates a benchmark that improves estimates for the next production.
